Getting started with digital signage: a complete guide

Digital signage doesn't have to be complicated. Whether you're a business owner setting up your first screen or an AV integrator deploying a fleet of displays, this guide explains everything you need to get from zero to live content.

TL;DR

Digital signage is any display screen showing content managed by software. To get started, you need: (1) a compatible screen, (2) a signage platform account, and (3) content. With SignM8, you can be live in under 15 minutes.

What is digital signage?

Digital signage is the use of screens — televisions, monitors, kiosks — to display dynamic content managed remotely via software. Unlike printed posters or static slide shows run from a USB stick, digital signage lets you:

  • Update content instantly from any device
  • Schedule content to show at the right time of day
  • Monitor your screens remotely and get alerted if something goes wrong
  • Manage multiple screens from one central dashboard

Common uses include restaurant menu boards, retail promotional displays, corporate notice boards, hotel lobby screens, gym class timetables, and waiting room content.

What equipment do you need?

1. A screen + player

The simplest way to get started is the web player — open signm8.com.au/player in Chromium on any device (Raspberry Pi, PC, Android box, etc.) connected to your screen and you're ready to pair. No app installation needed.

For a more permanent installation, SignM8 also supports native apps:

  • LG webOS commercial displays — via a native IPK app installed directly on the screen (Series 3.x and above)
  • Android devices — including Android TV boxes, sticks, and tablets (Android 8+)

Commercial-grade displays are recommended for permanent installations — they're designed to run 24/7 and are brighter for high-ambient-light environments. A standard consumer TV works fine with the web player or an Android stick for getting started.

See the Screen setup guide for step-by-step instructions for each player type.

2. A network connection

Your screen needs internet access to receive content and report its status. A wired ethernet connection is preferred for reliability. Wi-Fi works but is more susceptible to interference in commercial environments.

3. A SignM8 account

Step 1: Create your account

Go to signm8.com.au/register and create an account. You'll be asked for:

  • Your name and email address
  • Your business name and type (customer or integrator)
  • A password

After registration, you'll be walked through a short onboarding session powered by our AI assistant. It helps configure your account based on your industry and needs.

Step 2: Pair your first screen

With your account set up, you're ready to add a screen.

  1. Install the SignM8 app on your LG webOS display or Android device
  2. Open the Provisioning page in your SignM8 dashboard (under the Screens section)
  3. Scan the QR code displayed on the screen with your dashboard

The screen is instantly paired to your account. It will appear in your screens list with a status of "Paired."

Tip for integrators: You can pre-provision screens by serial number before delivery. When the device first boots on-site, it automatically claims itself to the correct tenant — no QR scan needed.

Step 3: Upload your content

Go to Content → Library and upload your first piece of content:

  • Images (JPG, PNG, GIF)
  • Video (MP4)
  • PDFs
  • Web URLs (displays a web page in a zone)
  • HTML5 bundles

Organise content with folders. You can also replace an asset in-place without losing its playlist associations.

Step 4: Create a playlist

A playlist is an ordered list of content items that plays in a loop. To create one:

  1. Go to Content → Playlists → New playlist
  2. Give it a name (e.g. "Lunchtime Specials")
  3. Add content items and set the duration for each
  4. Save the playlist

You can nest playlists inside other playlists for complex schedules.

Step 5: Design a layout

A layout divides your screen into one or more zones. Each zone plays a playlist (or a ticker, popup, or takeover).

For most businesses, the simplest option is to start with the Full Screen template — one zone, fills the whole screen. As your needs grow, you can switch to multi-zone layouts like the L-bar or top-strip.

Step 6: Schedule your content

The real power of digital signage is scheduling. Assign your layout to one or more screens with a time-of-day and day-of-week schedule.

SignM8 handles Daylight Saving Time automatically for all Australian time zones. Your "9 AM" schedule will play at 9 AM regardless of the time of year.

If two schedules overlap, the platform will warn you about the conflict before saving.

Step 7: Monitor and iterate

Once your content is live, the SignM8 dashboard shows:

  • Screen status — online, offline, or degraded
  • Health metrics — temperature, storage, memory
  • Uptime stats — 14-day rolling history
  • Proof-of-play — a log of every content item that was displayed

Set up alert rules to get notified by email if a screen goes offline, overheats, or runs low on storage — before your customers notice.

Common questions

Can I update content without my screens going blank? Yes. The screen continues playing existing content while new content downloads in the background. The update goes live seamlessly at the next playlist loop.

How often does the screen check for updates? The screen communicates with SignM8 on every heartbeat (typically every 30–60 seconds) and picks up new commands and schedule changes.

Can multiple staff update content? Yes. Invite users to your account and assign the appropriate role. Content managers can update playlists and menu boards without access to billing or account settings.
